You've made some great points, Diane. I've thought about writing nonfiction for a while....this was going to be the year, actually. Then I got swamped with fiction projects, so non-fic is again on the back burner. But at some point, I really want to give it a go.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, you could fill a book with tips for mystery writers, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteI've always read my share of nonfiction during my lifetime, but I read nonfiction even more now. Some nonfiction doesn't require a lot of research to write. I'm thinking of memoirs and personal essays. We can all reflect on our lives and share our experiences.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't know what to write. How to blog? I certainly can't write one on how to play guitar!
ReplyDeleteUmm...I used to write Law Review articles, but NOBODY wants to read those! Not even lawyers!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love to read and write nonfiction and appreciate the creativity of storytelling our truth. Creative nonfiction reaches so far beyond instruction. Thanks for this, Diane.
ReplyDeleteHi, Jess, Hi, L. Diane,
ReplyDeleteI never really thought about non-fiction writing, but I do have a bit of knowledge I could share on certain subjects...
I will certainly think about it...
Richard, memoirs are a little different - hard to market unless you're famous.
ReplyDeleteAlex, you could definitely write a book on blogging.
Karen, thank you, and if you have an idea, run with it.
Johanna - LOL!
Julie, yes it does.
Michael, you should!
I've never thought about writing a nonfiction book before, probably because I mostly read fiction. I can see how it would be beneficial to a writer's career.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading and writing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines
Fantastic points! I've considered writing a non-fiction book. I definitely think they're easier to sell than fiction, but I'd have to read a ton more non-fiction before I'd ever feel comfortable writing a non-fiction book.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what I qualify as an expert in. I find nonfiction rather daunting... despite writing it frequently for my blog.
ReplyDeleteI do like speaking and wish I had the opportunity to do move of it. I'm not sure I would feel expert in anything enough to write a nonfiction book.
ReplyDeleteCherie, whatever non-fiction you are drawn to, that might be your key to writing one.
ReplyDeleteMary, you are an expert in stars - start there.
Susan, think about your experience. If you enjoy speaking, then a non-fiction book would be so helpful to your career.
Interesting to think about! I have thought about it. Thank you for all the great tips~
ReplyDeleteThank you L. Diane and Jessica!!
Some very great points. And interesting to think about. Thanks L. Diane and Jessica.
ReplyDeleteNas
How about a book on tossing dwarves? Seriously, I cannot think of anything I personally would be expert enough at doing to write about it. Alex could certainly write about how to blog.
ReplyDeleteJo, that he could!
ReplyDeleteA book that educates is so valuable. Great post
ReplyDeleteSpoken like the excellent non-fiction author that you are! Really good points. I'm just such a head in the clouds kinda thinker I don't know if I have the discipline to try to make something non-fiction interesting...unless I could tell it in my slightly snarky blog voice...
ReplyDeleteTina @ Life is Good
I've never thought about writing a nonfiction book, but who knows maybe one day an idea will hit me.
ReplyDeleteI actually started off writing non-fiction. Just a few articles ranting/raving on various topics.
ReplyDeleteAt that stage fiction was the furthest thing from my mind.
Hi, Diane & Jessica,
ReplyDeleteLots of insight here Diane. I did the book tour subject for the A-Z and figure I'll put that together at some point in the future.
Tina, non-fiction books need a good voice, too!
ReplyDeleteMichelle, you already know how to do it then.
If I ever write a non-fiction it will be a memoir. I've been thinking of doing it. And me is probably the subject I have the most expert knowledge about and that might be a stretch even. You make a good point here.

Hi Jess - great guest author here .. Diane has made some really important points here ..
ReplyDeleteNon-fiction certainly sells ... excellent post - succinct too ... cheers to you both - Hilary
I love reading non-fiction and when it's well-written it's often more engaging than fiction for me. You've done a bang up job of this, Diane!
ReplyDeleteExcellent points, but until I have a nonfiction idea that hijacks my thoughts the way fiction does, I'll rather stick to what I know I'm good at.
ReplyDeleteDiane makes a lot of great points. I've often thought of non-fiction. Maybe one of these days I'll go past just thinking.
ReplyDeleteGreat points, Diane. I especially like the last point. It's so true, to teach means we have to learn the subject we're teaching more thoroughly.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. It seems so intimidating though.
ReplyDeleteSales of non-fiction dominate the market, right, Diane? I do write non-fiction, but not as an expert on anything buy myself (creative, autobiographical non-fiction).
ReplyDeletexoRobyn
I'm finding this to be true, even in the smallest ways. Thanks Diane, for your insight. Thanks to you too, Jessica, for hosting! :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so true. I think writers who write both non fiction and fiction gain access to a great market share for sure!
ReplyDeleteThanks Diane. This all makes sense to me, after all I found and initially followed you because you are an expert. (now I think of you as an on-line friend too)
