Tada! The Significant Other Blogfest!

Be sure to check out everyone else's entries by clicking the link above!

My partner's text is in black and my comments are in purple:
PS: English is my partner's second language so excuse the short post.

I'll start with writing habits. She spends too many hours in front of her computer and I’m really worried about her eyes,  actually – given that I love them! I would do anything to change this but I know that it’s not going to happen. She loves her computer more than me!

I do not! I love your eyes too, Sweetie. :o)

I know it’s always difficult to catch your dream. I was exactly the same. You need to sacrifice things and be absolutely devoted to it. If you have been through it at least once in your life, you are able to understand why someone does everything possible to get there. It is hard to realize that they are somewhere else, not here, beside you –most of the time at least - but it’s quite understandable :)

It frustrates me when she keeps asking me to read the stuff she wrote! And it's hard for me. It takes me twice as long as it would someone who speaks English fluently. I wish I could. And I wish she'd understand when I say I can't and not get upset and start yelling and crying and bringing up all the things she does for me and makes me feel guilty. I will read your book when it's published, baby, I promise! No matter how long it takes, I will do it. I love you.

I love you too! I'm sorry I get so upset. It's just that I want to share my joy with the man I love. I'm sorry it's so hard for you.

So there you have it. Can I just add something kinda funny about sharing a life with a man whose second language is English? Just for a laugh: One day we were sitting on the balcony, discussing some odd jobs that needed doing around the house, and he said,

"We need to get the pimps fixed."
"What?"
"The pimps."
"Pimps?"
"Yeah, they're leaking."
"Oh! The pipes!"

:o) Have a great weekend everyone!

  2. Pimps? Pipes? You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to!

Great post. Funnily enough, it's the same in our house too--and my wife's first language is English!

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Boy, do I hate it when those pimps need fixing...

  4. Aw, he's worried about your eyes. He's sweet

  5. Bless him. I couldn't help but laugh about the pimps!

It must be strange having a partner whose first language isn't English. My OH doesn't read fiction and is a very slow reader. He will read my stories but it takes him forever!

  8. He sounds very special, Jessica. I had a bit of a giggle as I remembered discussions between hubby and me that I wanted a larder and he wanted a pantry - until we figured out it's the same! See, English is my second language and I have given friends/colleagues a lot of good laughs :-)

  9. My wife reads fine, but I try not to bug her to read my stuff. Besides, she's tough on my work!
    Good stuff, guys.

  10. I think all of the significant others will say we spend too much time in front of the computer.

  11. I loved the honesty and lack of sugar-coating. Also the way he understands what its like to chase a dream. This was a joy to read, thank you so much to both of you for taking part and making today so special! :)

  12. Aww...I love this post - honest and funny. Your honey definitely seems to "get" you.

Thanks for sharing, Jess and Mr. Jess. =)

  13. I love the irony that an English-language writer's SO has English as a second language. You should write a story about that... humorous women's fic, it'd be fantastic! Great post and very sweet.

  14. I'm hearing a collective theme throughout these posts: we all spend too much time in front of our computers. Hmmm...We are addicts.

  15. PIMPS! LOL! Hubs and I have these kind of funny mix-ups, too. I love how he calls Bruce Willis 'Bruce Willies'. Ha!

He sounds so sweet, Jess! :)

  16. He's so sweet to say he'll read your book when it's printed! That's more than my hubs promised, though you have to forgive when English isn't their first languages. It's the support that counts. And I loved the pimps story. My husband still asks us to pass the "salt and peeper." Cracks us up!

  17. So sweet! The language barrier/doorway (I like to think of it as a fun thing rather than barrier) sounds like wonderful writing material... ;o)

    I enjoyed this immensely!

  18. Awww, he just sounds so cute, but I can understand you wanting to share with him while writing. I'm glad my SO is interested as well as invested in my writing. Check out my post.

  19. Don't feel bad Mister Jessica, my significant other speaks English fluently, is from the U.S., and still won't read what I write.

  20. What a sweetheart!!! I loved this!!!

I love Matthew's comment, down right hilarious!

As far as the pimps comment that had me laughing out loud!! Reminds me of visiting my friend for her wedding last year. She married a guy with his second language as english and he approached me and said...

    "I love the bitch."

I was confused. I had hoped he wasn't talking about my friends. Turns out he meant beach.

  21. Very sweet...and quite honest, huh? At least he's up front about it!

  22. Getting pimps fixed would solve a lot of problems, I think.

Seriously, it is tough from a writer's point of view when you loved ones don't just devour your book in one day. We just have to remember how supportive they are and we wouldn't be without that support.

    Dan - here's my wife's post.

  23. The pimps always need fixing. Something about the leisure suits and jewelry.

  24. Ahahaha! I've got to find a way to use "the pimps" in a sentence about the car, lol. So cute.

  25. Pimps? LOL! Your life together must be so entertaining. :)

  26. Sounds like you never have a boring day! So nice to have a guy stand with you especially when English isn't his first language!

    ReplyDelete
  27. OMG that was so funny! the pimps!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm the opposite, I try and not let my family read my stuff, it feels odd to me. Strangers are ok.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ha! Love the pimps vs pipes story!

I also love how honest this post is about both of you. He's so open about struggling to read your drafts yet still supporting you whole-heartedly, and it's so relatable and real.

    ReplyDelete
  30. He sounds patient. I like that you make him read your book even though English is not his native language. Sounds fair. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love this post and how it's completely honest.

    ReplyDelete
  32. What a great post! So honest. Your husband is so sweet. :)

  36. It's so sweet that he gets that you are after a dream and supports it! You be nice to him!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I really like the honesty in this one. You're lucky Jessica!

  38. At least your SO has a ligit reason for not reading. Mine speaks English just fine and still doesn. He too complains that I love my computre more than him. I think his favorite thing to say is: you should buy your computer a wedding ring, or maybe I'll give it mine...

    Yeah.

    Grat post.

    Those pimps are still funny!:)

  55. Would you fix those pimps already??? How funny - I love it!

He sounds like a sweet man! I know I love sharing what I write with my husband, and he will read it but I know he doesn't really want to because I wrote romance and fantasy, two of his least favorite things. Oh well.
