Yesterday I got caught up putting together a rough book trailer for String Bridge. I KNOW it's early, and I KNOW I won't be able to put it online until I have the book cover to add at the end, but I had an idea zooming round in my head the past few days (AND NIGHTS!) and couldn't let it go. I HAD to do a rough to make sure what I had in mind was going to work, otherwise I'd still be thinking about it and it would be NAGGING at me.
Anyway. My idea WORKS! I'm so pleased, and my publisher took a look at my rough and loved the images and video and concept. She suggested a few changes to the text, but that's totally fine with me. The most important things to me are the images and video I PURCHASED (150 euros - yikes!). Thank goodness Janice liked them. Silly me didn't even think about downloading the watermarked ones for free first to test them out. Imagine if she didn't like them! I'd be kicking myself. See, I'm very impatient. When I get an idea in my head I WANT TO DO IT NOW. I think I get that from my mother ;o)
Another WONDERFUL thing about this trailer is that the music is ORIGINAL :o) It's actually one of my mother's songs, which I listened to recently and some crazy light bulb went off in my head (this is how the whole trailer obsession began). But the cool thing is that she is allowing me to change some of the lyrics to better fit my MC and record a shorter version with my voice. I can't wait! I'm going into the studio this Friday. Normally I would be able to do it for myself as I have Cubase (a music program) at home, but the power supply plug for my console is broken. Damn. Never mind. I can just sit back and relax and watch the sound engineer fix everything for me.
So how about you? Do you get desperate to get started with something when you have an idea for it? Or are you patient, jot down your ideas, and let them simmer?
I think the only things I ever get done are the obsessive 'gotta do it now' projects.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank God for the internet, so I can find out HOW to do whatever it is I think up; because if I had to wait for the library to open every morning, the urges would pass and then I'd still be sitting here getting nothing done!
Well when I do get inspired about something, generally writing, I usually do jump right into it, but I would never do that with this kind of thing, mostly just because I have no skills whatsoever when it comes to editing video.

I would have done the same thing! Once an idea hits me on the head - nothing else matters. I have no patience when inspiration hits. None.

ReplyDeleteI'm usually a simmerer. When it gets to the point that the contents are about to boil over then I go to town. It's not so much a matter of patience as stubborn perfectionism. ;)

Sometimes I simmer on my ideas so long I get that thin film on top like you see on soup or spaghetti sauce that's been sitting atop the stove awhile. Okay, so I actually put the film there and now I need to wash my hair, but that's not the point. To make a long story slightly longer, I let things stew.

ReplyDeleteYep. Absolutely! I think that's the trademark of a creative person. Sometimes you just have to go with an idea while it's fresh and worry about the consequences later!

It depends. I'm patient most of the time but when I think of something that I think is brilliant I work like crazy till its done.
