My impatience yesterday could have proved to be a total waste of money ... I really should learn how to control my impulses!

Yesterday I got caught up putting together a rough book trailer for String Bridge. I KNOW it's early, and I KNOW I won't be able to put it online until I have the book cover to add at the end, but I had an idea zooming round in my head the past few days (AND NIGHTS!) and couldn't let it go.

I HAD to do a rough to make sure what I had in mind was going to work, otherwise I'd still be thinking about it and it would be NAGGING at me.

Anyway. My idea WORKS! I'm so pleased, and my publisher took a look at my rough and loved the images and video and concept. She suggested a few changes to the text, but that's totally fine with me. The most important things to me are the images and video I PURCHASED (150 euros - yikes!). Thank goodness Janice liked them. Silly me didn't even think about downloading the watermarked ones for free first to test them out. Imagine if she didn't like them! I'd be kicking myself. See, I'm very impatient. When I get an idea in my head I WANT TO DO IT NOW. I think I get that from my mother ;o)

Another WONDERFUL thing about this trailer is that the music is ORIGINAL :o) It's actually one of my mother's songs, which I listened to recently and some crazy light bulb went off in my head (this is how the whole trailer obsession began). But the cool thing is that she is allowing me to change some of the lyrics to better fit my MC and record a shorter version with my voice. I can't wait! I'm going into the studio this Friday. Normally I would be able to do it for myself as I have Cubase (a music program) at home, but the power supply plug for my console is broken. Damn. Never mind. I can just sit back and relax and watch the sound engineer fix everything for me.

So how about you? Do you get desperate to get started with something when you have an idea for it? Or are you patient, jot down your ideas, and let them simmer?

  1. I think the only things I ever get done are the obsessive 'gotta do it now' projects.

And thank God for the internet, so I can find out HOW to do whatever it is I think up; because if I had to wait for the library to open every morning, the urges would pass and then I'd still be sitting here getting nothing done!

  2. Well when I do get inspired about something, generally writing, I usually do jump right into it, but I would never do that with this kind of thing, mostly just because I have no skills whatsoever when it comes to editing video.

  3. I'm just like you, Jessica. When I'm plagued with an idea, I can't think of anything else until I take action on it. Good to know I'm not alone. =)

  4. Good think she liked it after all that LOL! I'm impatient, overzealous and just can't wait when an idea hits me! In fact waiting kills me! I hate it.

  5. I'm with you -- if a compelling idea pops into my head, I need to get it out ASAP.

Glad your rough trailer is such a gem. Know you'll have all kinds of fun polishing it. :)

  6. I would have done the same thing! Once an idea hits me on the head - nothing else matters. I have no patience when inspiration hits. None.

  7. Oh yes. Patience, thy name is NOT Summer.

Can't wait to see the trailer! I love watching them.

  8. Be patient, jot down your ideas, and let them simmer? People do that?? LOL I dive right in and more than once it has bit me in the ass. ;)

Your trailer sounds AWESOME! I can't wait to see it.

  9. Ha. Patience is not in my nature. In fact, now I am absolutely itching to see your trailer, even if it's rough. Cruel of you to tease those of us with Impatience as our middle name. xo

  10. When I get an idea, watch out. I have to act on it then, and I mean right then.

  11. I am a tortoise by nature, which means sometimes good ideas run away from me. :-( A smidge of impatience can serve the muse well.

  12. oh, lord no. I'm far too impatient/impulsive for that! :D

Can't wait to see your trailer! When the muse strikes in that way, it's usually something very good. And I love that it's your mom's song~ :o) <3

  14. I am so impressed by all you are doing for this video. I can't wait to see what you put together. I am learning so much when I hear what goes into them. someday. . .

  15. I'm usually a simmerer. When it gets to the point that the contents are about to boil over then I go to town. It's not so much a matter of patience as stubborn perfectionism. ;)

  16. Congrats on getting that video done! =) And I'd say both. Sometimes I have to write it all down immediately, other times I like to let it simmer for a while. =)

  18. Sometimes I simmer on my ideas so long I get that thin film on top like you see on soup or spaghetti sauce that's been sitting atop the stove awhile. Okay, so I actually put the film there and now I need to wash my hair, but that's not the point. To make a long story slightly longer, I let things stew.

  19. I have no patience. I would probably be doing what you are.

  20. I do what you do, sometimes--I'll just burn through the project without thinking things like, "Will this work?" "What are the consequences?"

  21. If I could do everything yesterday, I would. I cant wait to see your trailer it already sounds epic with all the work you are putting in it.

  22. Letting my ideas simmer is an important step in my creative process.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yep. Absolutely! I think that's the trademark of a creative person. Sometimes you just have to go with an idea while it's fresh and worry about the consequences later!

  24. Well... I get attacked by an overabundance of story ideas. I have to let them simmer, otherwise I would never get anything done...

  25. That's cool you'll be singing the song!
I'm very patient. I plan. I check. I wait. Very patient. (My wife calls it procrastination, but what does she know?)

  26. Haha! I'm SO like you. When I get an idea for something in my head, it MUST be done! I jump first. Not always a good thing.

  27. Ooo, i can't WAIT to see it.

And yep, I'm totally impatient. I'm trying to work on that, because publishing is slooooooooooooooow. :)

  28. I get the itch when a good idea comes to me. I can't wait to hear your song and see your promo.

  29. I go back and forth. Sometimes I have patience sometimes I don’t.

  30. Oh yeah, very impatient sometimes. I'm learning to let things simmer as I get older, but it's still hard to resist.

  31. Well, you are impatient, but I am glad it worked out well in the end.

  32. Ooh, that sounds really cool doing your mom's song. That just seems so much more personal and romantic to record a song your mother wrote for your book trailer. So glad your publisher liked your ideas!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Too funny! I can totally relate to this. I get these ideas in my head and then I'm just obsessed :) I'm glad it worked out for you!

    ReplyDelete
  34. How cool that you are going to use your mother's music! Very exciting.

    I'm patient. Maybe too patient.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It depends. I'm patient most of the time but when I think of something that I think is brilliant I work like crazy till its done.
