R is for ... ???

Thanks to all who dropped by yesterday! The answer to yesterday's post was, QUIRKINESS.

If you are new to this blog please read the note in the header above this post so you know what to do! Thanks!

In this poem you have to think about what the little girl is trying to escape, not how she is feeling herself:

Stickers—scratch ‘n’ smell.
Strawberry shortcake,
orange meringue,
moments of heaven
when I’m alone.
I block out your voice—sniff!
Hoarse—tired,
he lied again.
Please stay away
from the kitchen.

Stickers—scratch ‘n’ smell.
Peppermint chocolate,
cherry lane,
moments of heaven
when I’m alone.
I block out his moan—sniff!
Daddy—groan.
You stabbed him again.
Please stay away
from the bathroom.

Stickers—scratch ‘n’ smell.
Hubba Bubba,
lemon squash,
moments of heaven
when I’m alone.
I block out your scream—sniff!
Self-inflicted—fraught.
You cut yourself again.
Please stay away
from my bedroom.

Please stay away.
Please stay away
from my stickers.

So, can you guess the emotion/feeling/state of mind (a noun) depicted in this piece that begins with the letter ‘R’? Please nip over to Nicole's blog to read her interpretation of our R-prompt word. Here’s the link!

PS: Take a look at my sidebar. There's a little somethin' I've been hiding. But is now revealed below the cover of String Bridge ...

  3. I have no idea on this. Sounds like this poor child may have an abusive parent, so I suppose Rage could work here too, but I'm not sure.

I already knew about your chap book, but I love the cover you've selected!

  5. Call me terrible, but the word rape came to mind while reading...

  6. Hmm, well I guessed rage at Nicole's. But I believe rage can also work here, if you're going for the "intense feeling" part of the definition.

    Your poems are terrific, Jessica!

  9. This made me shiver. Really eery and full of implication. I would guess rage but I don't think that's it.

  15. Retreat. She's hiding, retreating into her world of pleasant smells and bright colors. Hidden in the bathroom away from reality?

Just my guess. Loved the poem. Evocative and raw.

  16. Having read this and Nicole's I think the word is Retribution.

Very strong poem Jessica. Raw with emotion.

  17. I'm saying rage only because that is what I said at Nicole's blog. What A raw and real poem.

  18. A great poem! I'll admit, I had to read Nicole's entry before trying to guess the word here. I fear I might have been reading more into your images than I needed to. The last line made me consider something more literal - so I'll go with "rage" here, too. :)
