Singing into toothbrushes with socks stuck in my top ... yes, today I tell you a secret ...

Remember when you were a kid, and your favorite song would play on the radio, or on TV Hits, or on Rage (Australian music video show), and you'd grab the nearest object that resembled a microphone and perform to yourself in the mirror, striking poses that would probably only suit KISS?

Remember?

If you were female, you'd also probably smother your lips in red, stick some socks down the front of your top, or even better still, find some cardboard to make pointy cones to stick down your top instead ... Express yourself! ... Vogue, Vogue ...

If you were male, you'd be touching and grinding your groin while attempting to simultaneously do the moonwalk, or painting your face and declaring that you were trying to mimic army disguise when your dad caught you out and gave you a concerned look ...

Remember?

I do ...

I would also sleep with my Walkman (yes, WALKMAN, with those heavy headphones that resembled earmuffs), close my eyes and envision myself on stage performing Alanah Miles', Black Velvet in the raunchy fetish gear Cher sported with her tattooed butt showing ...

Yes. I did.

Now, last night, I didn't go as far as sticking socks down my top (I think my breasts are quite decent, so really, there was no need ...), nor did I sing into my toothbrush and strike poses in the mirror, but I did lie in bed listening to music, acting out the moves in my head, that I'd make on stage, pretending to be a famous rock star and all ... hehehe ... but you know what the best part of last night's little party in my head was? It was TO MY OWN MUSIC!!!

Hahahaha ... yeah, that was fun ... I should probably let myself do that more often. I had a pretty awesome night ...

PS: I have an hour-long radio interview (in English) this Thursday at 4:30 pm, on Kokkino 105.5 FM, where the entire soundtrack to my debut novel, String Bridge, will be played in between questions. :o) I'm excited! (and flippin' nervous) Hopefully those of you outside Greece will be able to access its online streaming ...

So how was your weekend? Got any secrets you'd like to admit to? ;o)

  1. That is awesome. We used to make music videos. I remember rolling my eyes a lot...don't know why but apparently that's what I thought was hot. Lol.

  2. I LOve to party in my head but I've been asked if I'm having a stroke when I do it with people around. SO cool that you partied to your own soundtrack. SO COOL you have a soundtrack. Rock on!

  3. Your own music! I think that must be immensely more satisfying. I do this kind of thing on my commute, alone in my car, singing along to a soundtrack, but I think it's really cool to have your own music in your head instead of someone else's!

  4. Wow Jess that's amazing! You're going to rock it today! Can't wait to hear how much fun you had!! I'd love to hear you play! I'm going to have to grab a soundtrack!

  8. This is why I can't write with music on. There'd be more singing (badly) and less writing.

  9. That is so cool - the interview that is.

When I was a kid, it wasn't singing in front of the mirror for me. It was dancing around the house like a crazy fool.

  11. I don't know what you heard, but I never stuffed my shirt. Never. I just had a particularly bulky sweater.

Really looking forward to your interview! The site's in Greek, but I saw a "Live" button, and right now it's playing some pop folk with a lyric about "maybe I read too many books..."

  12. Good luck with the radio interview! That is so awesome you got to do the rock star thing to your own music. Whoo Hoo!! I used to fantasize that I was Belinda Carlysle from the Go Go's. I had my sparkly scarves and bracelets and jelly shoes. I rocked those Vacation vocals, yes I did. :)

  13. Oh, I remember all too well! I even had a favorite "microphone" hairbrush. But partying in your head to your own music? How cool is that?!?! Congratulations on the interview!

  14. LOL. I didn't pose in the mirror much, but I used to make up dances to songs. I used to dance around the living room pretending to be a backing dancer. lol.

    Good luck with the interview.

  22. Ha! I did stick socks down my top. Truthfully, I'd still like to! I've move onto other more sophisticated methods, though. :)

  23. I did those things! So excited for you, Jess. Good luck on Thursday!!!

  24. Whenever I walk to work I listen to music and imagine the music video in my head - and it usually involves me looking badass and singing awesome (neither of which are achievable in a real world setting, hehe).

  25. When we were kids we used to play...wait for it... dog band. Because not only did we love to sing, we also love animals, especially dogs, so we would pretent to be dogs who were in a band at night and regular dogs during the day.
    Good times.

  26. You are going to live the rock star dream! When you do start performing your new album, we'll want photos.
And I didn't do much singing - I was too busy playing air guitar.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Did Alex just say air guitar. LOL.
You go girl. That is awesome! We want to live vicariously through you so lots and lots of pictures are required.

  28. Congratulations - fantastic!

I don't have to remember that far back - I prance to music most days - hairbrush optional!

  29. Can't say I've had that particular dream, but I do understand role-playing.

I'm sure your interview will go well.
