I'm heading to New York City and I need your advice ...

On November 29, I head to New York for ten days.

On my own.

It's a little scary, and daunting, especially since I have a TV interview lined up on December 4, to talk about Bitter Like Orange Peel on CT STYLE in New Haven, CT. (I have to jump on a train from New York to New Haven at 6AM to make my 9AM appointment.)

But I'm also excited. I've bought myself a New York Pass and intend to see as many of the 'must-sees,' and do as many of the 'must-dos' as possible: Broadway here I come!

And to get an even bigger bang for my buck, I've decided to make this a "research trip." I'm going to write an entire poetry book called TEN (working title) about my observations in New York City. This means I'd also like to check out some places that aren't the typical touristic fare.

Are there places where local artistic types frequent that wouldn't be listed in any guidebook? Or places of interest that aren't advertised as such? Please tell me your recommendations! But remember, I'm alone, so please don't send me anywhere you wouldn't walk through without company, because I'm paranoid like that. :-)

Please tell me in the comments, or email me. I'd REALLY love to know!

  1. I don't know much about New York City. I'm sure, though, there are many guidebooks to choose from that would answer your questions. Have fun. Hart Crane was inspired by Brooklyn Bridge.

  2. I'm sure you'll have a blast! I've only been to NYC once, so won't be of much help.

  3. I've never been, so I'm no help. But how exciting! Have a wonderful time. :)

  4. If you can find someone to get you into the lovely Pomander Walk street, that'd be awesome! I peered through the gates... Medeia was just there, too, and posted some great photos. I love the Morgan Library - there's always an interest exhibit or two on. Same for the Public Library. Will try to think of more...

  5. Congratulations on the TV interview. I've never been to New York, but I suggest you check out the blog Girl Meets Life as it's about a girl living in NYC and she talks about all the fun places she visits.

  7. My newest granddaughter should be born by then--you could always go see her as she would be my main attraction in that area :)

I've been to NYC several times but never immersed myself in the experience so I can't recommend much. It's probably kind of good that you will be on your own so you can do what you want to do most. The times when I've gone with several people we ended up not doing as much because we didn't always want to do the same things.

My main thing in NYC is pizza. I've gotta have some of that New York pizza to make the experience complete.

  8. It's been a long time since I was there. Yes, make sure you check out some of the unique restaurants, especially pizza joints.
