When Jessica Bell first approached me about contributing to Indiestructible: Inspiring Stories from the
Publishing Jungle, I thought, “Great idea!” and then thought, “What ever
will I write about?” Although I still didn’t know, I jumped on the opportunity.
And then I fretted. I wanted to be so inspiring that the reader would throw
down the book, spring to his/her feet and exclaim, “I CAN DO THIS! I WILL DO THIS! I AM INDIE; HEAR ME ROAR!”
RAWR!
But what
topic would do such a thing? I didn’t know. Making the decision to self-publish
is not an easy one that should be taken lightly. It’s a lot of work. I mean A.
LOT. But the rewards are unimaginable. Seriously—I never imagined all that I
would gain by going this route. And I’ve gained so much.
So I
considered writing about those rewards—the success I’ve seen as an indie
author. Although so many authors have done much better financially than I have,
I’ve done pretty well, and that’s not the only benefit. By far. Still . . .
that idea didn’t grab me.
As I
nearly drove myself crazy thinking about the perfect topic for my essay, I
continued answering the fan mail I received, often from new writers asking for
advice. And that’s when it hit me—this is the advice I give every day. And it’s
meant to be inspiring. So why not share it with everyone without them having to
personally write to me?

Cook:
Kristie Cook writes the bestselling,
award-winning SOUL SAVERS SERIES, which will include seven novels, companion
novellas, and short stories. She also writes THE BOOK OF PHOENIX SERIES, a trilogy (for now anyway).
Both are new adult paranormal romance/contemporary fantasies. She has many
other ideas jotted in notebooks scattered around the house and more in her
head, but she’s learned to write for whatever character screams the loudest.
