#AtoZChallenge: Magic Dirt & Joni Mitchell

WINNER #06: Congratulations THERESA MILSTEIN! Drop me an email to let me know which album of mine you want and I'll send you a download link.
_______________

Okay, below I've embedded a track that is more current and will be friendly to your ears, but I first started getting into these folks way before they signed with Warner and became "pop/rock". When I started getting into these folks, they sounded a lot more like THIS.

Magic Dirt was pretty much my intro into headbangarama. And they've been around since 1992, very much the headbanging-letsgetwastedandoffourtits-era. I wasn't really wastedandoffmytits that often, but when I listened to these guys it was easy to pretend I was wastedandoffmytits. Get my drift?

As far as inspiration goes, well, I tried to write music like Magic Dirt, but very much failed. My voice is just too "pretty" most of the time. And this is where Joni Mitchell comes in. The song below is the first song I EVER wanted to perform live. In fact, I begged my mother to teach me how to sing it for a talent contest. But at 12 I was BAAAAAAADDDDDDD. So glad she didn't let me vomit the sound of a squealing teapot to a live audience ...

Have you ever been in a talent contest?

Don't forget to drop by Dawn Ius' blog, my partner in crime, to see her music pick for M.

  1. I'd never heard any Joni Mitchell songs until I watched 'Love, Actually' which features Both Sides Now (is that the title? See I don't even know that.) It the context of the plot, it's very poignant. Great acting by Emma Thompson too.

  2. Both Sides Now is actually one of my very favorite songs. Michell's voice is like velvet, and it is such an amazing, and true song (and Love Actually is in my top ten favorite movies of all time). And I think I have no choice but to learn more about any band called Magic Dirt!

  4. That's such a great Joni song! I could zone out to her all day when the mood is right. Just brushed up on all your music posts. I can honestly say I've never listened to PJ Harvey. I need to check her out. Love Jamiroquai!
    Congrats to Theresa!

  6. I LOVE Joni. The depth of her passion, her words, her melodies... such talent. And yes, I've been in a couple of talent contests/shows.

  9. Reading all the A to Z posts on musicians make me realise just how restricted my taste in music is: Sinatra, Kenny Rogers, Disney, Backstreet Boys and Westlife. Oh dear!

  14. Magic Dirt are definitely one of my top bands ;) Adalita rocks my socks! and Joni Mitchell is on my radar but I haven't explored her catalogue nearly enough!

    I did do a singing contest once, one of those over-the-phone ones. I think I was 11 or 12, and I won $100 ;)
