Insecure Writer's Support Group (sorry I missed the last couple!)

Wow ... I think I've forgotten to post for this group in the last two months ... I'm so sorry!

I have a lot of insecurities, actually. I think any creative being does. It's possibly the most felt feeling among us. So why is it so hard to voice?

I'm going to be completely honest. I don't really feel like talking about my insecurities today, because I'm trying to block them out after learning my publisher, Lucky Press, is ceasing publication, and that my debut novel, after only SIX months, will be out of print.

But hey, life goes on, and (fingers crossed), I may just be lucky enough to find a solution very soon. My fingers are tightly crossed, believe me! Please do me a favour and cross yours too!

I think you can probably guess what my insecurities are after this news, so I won't go into them.

So let me leave you with this:

Initially, I was angry. Then I was depressed. Then I was understanding ...
But now I'm in limbo. I feel like my book is in a coma. And I can't wait for the day the doctors tell me it's woken up.

If you were in my position, how would you feel?

  1. Make sure you retain the rights to your novel. So many small presses are going out of business right now. It is such a shame.

    Best wishes.

  3. I can totally understand how you feel. BTW, did I tell you how much I loved String Bridge? When I moved to Mexico, I got rid of many books. Yours was one that I kept. I'm sure you'll find a solution...and all my fingers are crossed for you.

  5. People tell me things happen for a reason. Sometimes we don't know why at the time. I'm so sorry this has happened.

  6. Would feel totally gutted, but after a day or two of anger, the fact that I'd been accepted initially would motivate me to try again until I won the battle! You've done it once, now do it again and show them!

  7. I'm so sorry, Jessica :( It's tough out there. I'd feel the same way you're feeling: frustrated angry, sad, hopeless. My fingers and toes are crossed that you find another solution soon!

  10. Bloody frustrated....all that blood sweat and tears and now you have to start all over again. Keeping all fingers and toes crossed that you find a new publisher soon.

  12. The obvious solution is to release it as an ebook. They're supposed to be the future, aren't they? If I were you I'm not sure I'd be thinking about looking to produce paperbacks. Again they can be done cheaply enough using POD. The main thing is you've got a body of decent reviews to use in your promotions. I can't see a new publisher being interested in the book though. It's done a good job in building up your credibility as an author but it would be coming to the end of its shelf life in the bookshops anyway. It looks nice on the CV and will help in pitching your next book(s).

  13. So sorry, Jessica. I would be feeling all of the above. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed and hoping a solution finds it's way to you.

    Take care,

  14. Hope you can get your rights back and release it yourself. My publisher did the same thing to me, only my books are still available; they're just not being promoted except by me and they aren't being put into ebook format! That's the worst. So I'm with you on this one. I totally understand how you feel.

  19. To be honest, I have no doubt that you will find another loving home for your book. It was very well received and there are many inventive presses and publishers out there who would jump at the chance at hosting such a multi-talented artist. I wish you the best of luck, of course, but seriously, I don't think you'll need it.

  20. Ugh. That has to be so disappointing. However, if you got it published once, it stands to reason that you'll get it published again. Sometimes great things come from bad moments.

  21. Aww, sorry to hear that about your novel. I'd probably be pouting, but eventually, I'd pull myself up and look at my options. I'm sure you will figure out what to do whether it's find another publisher or do it yourself. For now, just try to remember it's been published and that's something not many people can claim.

  22. Hello. That is horrible. I'd be a train wreck for a while if that happened. Hope you find a solution soon. Xx

  23. Wow, that is tough. Hope you don't give up and find another home for it! If nothing else, your next book might sell easier because you have already been published.

  24. Sorry about this, Jessica. Sorry I haven't visited your blog for awhile...it's because I haven't blogged in months! I'm back now. Perhaps something good is going to come out of this, Jess.
